What is Molar Uprighting?

What is Molar Uprighting? Most of us don't spend too much time thinking about our teeth – until something happens that demands our sudden focus.

When our back teeth become tilted, which can occur for a variety of reasons, the primary course of treatment involves a procedure known as "uprighting." This can help correct the tilt in your tooth and help preserve it.

Correcting Molar Tilting with Uprighting

Our teeth aren't there just to help us chew our foods and keep our smile pretty; oftentimes, our other teeth rely on one another for support and structure.

When something interrupts that complex system in our mouths, complications can arise. One of these complications, called "molar tilting" occurs when a patient has a tooth extracted from their mouth. Because the other teeth depended upon it to keep it upright, it can gradually start to shift and drift into the vacated space.

The tooth can become vulnerable to decay and, furthermore, the gums and the jawbone can become compromised. Your risk of losing the tooth is greatly increased.

Fortunately, uprighting is a routine procedure that can thoroughly correct this problem before it becomes a dental emergency. The degree of tilting largely determines how we'll approach treatment for the tooth. How we approach uprighting your molar will be reliant upon the following factors:

•  The severity of the tilt
•  The location of the tooth
•  How we want to move it

Molar uprighting is a routine procedure and can help preserve your teeth. We will work with you every step of the way to ensure your comfort and save your tooth. Typically, it is performed under general anesthesia, and you'll be expected to follow up within a month to ensure proper healing.

If you suspect that you may have molar tilting, please give our office a call today to schedule a comprehensive dental exam. We will thoroughly assess your teeth and, if it turns out you are a candidate for molar uprighting, we will explain it to you in clear detail.
