Ways to Self-Assess If You Have Gum DiseaseWhen you are practicing your usual oral health routine, you spit in the sink and notice a tiny amount of blood. Most people would chalk that up to a gum that got brushed too hard, but you know you have done nothing different brushing and see it for the red flag it is.

The first warning sign of gingivitis. Both gingivitis and periodontitis have shown that they raise your risk of developing diseases like diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, pneumonia, and cancer. Early detection is your best friend. You can treat the issue before it gets serious if you know the signs to look for.

Signs That You Have Gum Disease

Red and swollen gums: This will be one of the first signs your gums need attention. Gum disease will normally start with a swollen gum line. They can become tender, painful, and bleed easily when you floss or brush them. You notice a change in your breath. Bacteria release toxins that can irritate the gums and teeth and have a foul smell. Do the smell test. Lick your hand and smell in after 10 seconds. Your teeth look longer than you last checked, they aren't growing, and your diseased gums are shrinking. If you sip a cold drink and it stings your teeth. Is a symptom of gum disease. Your teeth are sending you an S.O.S. message.
