How Brushing Too Often Hurts Your Teeth

How Brushing Too Often Hurts Your TeethWhile brushing your teeth is good for your dental health, you don't want to get obsessed with performing the activity. Brushing too often can erode the enamel and damage your gums.

Therefore, you need to take a moderate approach when it comes to brushing and flossing. You should also use a soft-bristled brush, as brushing too vigorously with a hard-bristled brush can, again, hurt your gums and teeth.

Do You Have Receding Gums?

Overbrushing or using a vigorous approach can lead to a dental problem, known as toothbrush abrasion. This type of abrasion is not good for the teeth and gums, as it can wear down the enamel, which increases sensitivity. Being a little too aggressive with a toothbrush can also cause a receding gum line. When the gums have receded, the roots of the teeth are exposed. When this happens, you can experience additional sensitivity.

Therefore, you need to use a commonsense approach when brushing your teeth. Normally, brushing the teeth two or three times a day after meals is okay. Doing so will not cause teeth damage. However, brushing too hard or long after eating, especially after consuming acidic foods, will damage your teeth and gums. While you may think that using forceful strokes, deep cleans your teeth, they actually wear down the enamel and irritate the gum line.

How do you brush your teeth? Are you using the right approach? If your toothbrush is too firm or you are too aggressive, you can do more harm than good. To make sure you follow the proper guidelines for tooth and gum care, you need to see us and schedule a checkup. It never hurts to be reminded about how you should brush your teeth. Protect your smile and lower the incidence of cavities and gum disease. Knowing how to brush your teeth is just as important as brushing and flossing each day.
