Are Electric Toothbrushes Worth It? West Hartford CT

Electric Toothbrushes at Elmwood Dental, in West Hartford, CTYour toothbrush is an essential tool in your oral care arsenal. Choosing a toothbrush used to be a simple task, deciding between soft, medium, or hard bristles. Today, there are numerous options available, including electric toothbrushes. You hear a lot about electric toothbrushes.

Manual Vs. Electric Toothbrushes

Both manual and electric toothbrushes are designed to accomplish the same goals, eliminating plaque, bacteria, and other debris from the surfaces of your teeth, reducing your risk for tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease. Manual toothbrushes require you to actively work to achieve these goals. They can get the job done, but they require a bit more work. You also have to make sure that you actively brush for two full minutes.

An electric toothbrush provides you with a bit more power. They can cover a larger area faster, providing you with more strokes per minute than you can manage manually. The electric brush does the hard work for you, and many are even equipped with a timer. This ensures that you get your full two minutes every time.

For proper use, hold the brush at a 45 degree angle, 1/2 gum, 1/2 tooth, for about 4-5 seconds, while holding gently in the areas and not pressing hard on either the tooth or the gums.

The Benefits of an Electric Toothbrush

There are several benefits to using an electric toothbrush. These benefits include:
•  They offer more strokes per minute. Where most adults average about 300 strokes per minute, an electric toothbrush can offer thousands, even tens of thousands, in a single minute.
•  You do not have to work as hard to clear away plaque and bacteria.
•  Electric toothbrushes can be more effective at eliminating buildup. Studies have shown that individuals using electric toothbrushes have less accumulation of plaque and bacteria on their teeth than those who use manual brushes.
•  You are less likely to brush too hard. Brushing too hard, something often done with a manual toothbrush can result in enamel wear and gum recession.
•  Electric toothbrushes can be beneficial for patients who have a hard time using their hands, such as those with arthritis. With an electric toothbrush, you do not need to move your hands as much. You only need to move the toothbrush from tooth to tooth.
•  Electric toothbrushes can also be advantageous for children. Smaller electric toothbrushes designed for children can be more fun for children, providing them with the motivation they need to brush their teeth.

Are There Any Disadvantages?

While electric toothbrushes do have several significant benefits, there are also a few disadvantages as well.

•  The biggest disadvantage to electric toothbrushes is their cost. You can spend between $60 and $100 on a toothbrush, and replacement heads can also be costly. However, since they are often more effective, they are worth the investment as you save money preventing dental work.

•  They can provide a false sense of accomplishment. You still need to make sure that you brush your teeth properly, and cover all surfaces.

•  Electric toothbrushes can be harder to travel with. Unlike a manual brush, which can be easily stashed in a bag, electric toothbrushes are bigger and bulkier.

Is an Electric Toothbrush Right for Me?

An electric toothbrush is a highly effective tool that helps to eliminate plaque and bacteria from your teeth. While you can still achieve good results with a manual brush, it requires a little more work, and you need to make sure that you do not brush too hard. Even with an electric toothbrush, it is still important that you brush twice daily, floss once a day, and still, have your teeth professionally cleaned and examined every six months.
